Building a Recovery Routine (When You Have No Structure Anymore)

A basic recovery routine starts with a fixed wake time, one recovery activity per day, and at least 3 meetings per week. Structure doesn't make you boring. It keeps you sober when your brain is still rewiring.

Why Does Structure Matter in Early Recovery?

In active addiction, your life ran on one thing: getting and using. Everything else, work, relationships, sleep, came second.

Now you're sober. And you have all this empty time, and nothing to fill it with.

That's when trouble starts.

This is why routine matters. Not because you're boring now. Because structure keeps you alive.

Why Does Routine Work?

Your brain in early recovery is like a house after a hurricane. The floor is gone, the walls are cracked, and you're trying to live in it.

Routine is the scaffolding. It holds you up while you rebuild.

When you have structure:

  • You don't have to make decisions (decisions exhaust you in early recovery)
  • Your days have built-in recovery activities
  • Idle time, which leads to cravings, is minimized
  • Sleep, meals, exercise happen regularly

What Does a Basic Morning Routine Look Like?

Wake up at the same time every day. Even weekends. Your body needs consistency.

After waking:

  • Bathroom, hygiene (basic)
  • Meditate 5 minutes (or pray, or just breathe)
  • Exercise 15-30 minutes (walk, stretch, anything)
  • Breakfast (real food, not coffee alone)

That's it. That's your morning.

What About an Evening Routine?

  • Dinner (a real meal)
  • Wind down (no screens 30 min before bed)
  • Journal 5 minutes (what went well, what triggered me, what I'm grateful for)
  • Bed at same time

What Should a Weekly Structure Include?

At minimum:

  • Go to 3 meetings
  • Call your sponsor 3 times
  • Exercise 4-5 days
  • Do one thing you enjoy (movie, book, walk)

Why Are Weekends So Dangerous?

Weekends are dangerous. No work to fill time. Old triggers (Saturday night, Sunday Funday) are louder.

Plan for weekends:

  • Saturday morning: meeting
  • Saturday afternoon: activity (gym, hiking, anything)
  • Saturday night: meeting or sponsor call
  • Sunday: prepare for the week, meeting

How Do You Build a Routine When You're Working?

If you have a job:

  • Morning routine before work
  • At least one recovery activity during the day (call, meeting, reading)
  • Evening routine after work
  • Meetings at night or lunch

You don't have to go to 5 meetings a day. But you can't go to zero.

How Do You Get Started?

  1. Set a wake time. Same every day.
  2. Add one recovery activity. Morning or night.
  3. Schedule meetings. Put them in your calendar.
  4. Build from there. Add as you can.
  5. Be flexible. Life happens, but come back to routine.
